7 things to know about print:Print Seminart

This is based on Lithographic printing


Colour Models

  • CMYK
  • RGB
  • Hexochrome
  • Spot Colour
  • PMS ( Pantone Matching System)

Hexochrome- 6 colour print mode. Usually for spot colour/ special varnish. Some laser printer, extra magenta and extra cyan= increases gammet

Formats
  • Standard ISO paper sizes,
  • A & SRA sizes
  • Imperial ( North A) versus Metric
  • Tabloid, Broad Sheet, Berliner
  • Envelope 'C' Sizes ( eg C5 to A5)

SRA slightly bigger- printers use for bleed, tick marks and registration marks then crop to normal A sizes.


Berliner (size between Tabloid and Broadsheet)

Stock
  • weights (gsm)
  • Finish (gloss,silk,matte)
  • Coated/un-coated
  • Laid or Woven
  • Boards, Cartons ( a range)
  • Plastics and Acetates.


Art Work
  • Document set up
  • File format and fonts
  • spell-check
  • colour specification
  • Printer's marks ( include when send to printer)
  • Pre-flight Check- run pre flight software to check colour system, shows area that are not compatible with print.
  • Mock-ups- make mock up, take to printer, so they know when printing what its suppose to look like
  • Proof- will come as sheets but can ask for made u proof- CHECK before printer real thing
  • Sign-off ( really important) -Get Client to do it?

Costs
  • Get a quote very early on before you start the job in earnest if possible
  • Identical specification for 3 print estimators to work to
  • Learn roughly what thing cost (unit cost)
  • Understand viable minimum quatities
  • extras/ authors corrections- client changes something....add cost
  • delivery ?
